Public bug reported:
I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid today via command line "update-manager -d". After the upgrade process completed, I needed to reboot. This reboot failed. The following appeared on the screen "Grub loading", "error: the symbol 'grub_puts' not found", and I am dropped inti a command line: "grub rescue" . I have no idea why I got here, although I attribute this to the upgrade failed. I wasble to recover grub by booting from a live CD and re-stalling grub via "grub-install". I received errors during this process, but I must have recovered enough so that I was able to boot into Lucid on my hard drive. During the upgrade process I was asked to slect the partition I wanted grub installed. I chose sda5 for my system since that is where Karmic was. I expect the upgrade process to cleaning install grub and to be able to boot into the upgrade. This did not happen.
