Pete is right, sorry, I didn't know about the vanilla kernel being
available. And another_sam, what I meant was not the kernel compilation
options (default or not), but the patch set each distribution uses to
get the kernel the way they like it (or consider more robust, faster,
more [something]...).

However, I don't agree with Pete when he insists on not using any other
kernel apart from ppa. I think everyone here is well clear on why I
proposed the test, so another_sam will not complain to ubuntu-devs that
his new spanking kernel has wireless 100% but something else won't work,
"so have it fixed for those new bugs". Don't worry about that.

A test is only a test. If the ppa kernel is indeed vanilla with all the
options the ubuntu team normally sets, then that's the best bet for the
test. If, however, by any chance the ppa kernel shows the same bug, then
another_sam should really try the vanilla kernel from kernel.org, just
to be sure. This is a simple testing procedure that everyone does
nowadays, since it's the less time-consuming approach available.
