The problem occurred twice again today.

The first time after waking the system from suspended state. Wireless
connection couldn't be re-established, the system froze after a few
seconds and rebooted.

After that reboot I noticed that the system had connected to the wireless hotspot on the 2nd floor (~10% signal strength) and didn't even find the usual hotspot on the 3rd floor (less than 5 meters away from me).
Hooking the system up to a gigabit switch and clicking the button in wicd to connect through eth0 caused another freeze and reboot.
