Exactly same problems with the Beta 1 release.

Nomodeset doesn't help.

Is it possible to recover log information from the persistent memory
file?

  I tried to enter the Live session "Try Ubuntu without installing" from a
  live USB.
  
  The screen goes black, the cooler turns on indefinitely (suggesting
  strong cpu activity), and the keyboar locks (I can't turn on/off
  capslock or numlock).
  
  Tha same happens when I choose "Install Ubuntu".
  
  Computer: Medion MD 96419.
  
  Install: Gnome Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3, copied to an USB-stick partition
  via Ubuntu USB Creator.
  
+ Nomodeset does not help.

  Any more details are needed, just ask.
  
  Karmic installation CD boots perfectly, both for installing and for the
  live session.
