Solved it following the steps from: http://monespaceperso.org/blog-
en/2009/12/17/upgrade-alsa-1-0-22-on-ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10

Apparently my Alsa version was specifically compiled for another kernel
version. Hope this helps.
