I managed to get the sound started again by following a reinstall
procedure I found online. Since then it has stopped a time or two after
an update, but in these cases it just involved changing a setting back
to what it was.

Thanks for following up.

I have two daughters that also run Ubuntu, and they have had similar issues. In one case, the sound suddenly came back on - the other daughter is still working on it.
