Hello.
Sorry for the lack of response.
1. I upgraded to 9.10 seven weeks ago and the bug's frequency decreased to once in two weeks (as opposed to every 3-4 days with 9.4).
2. I also started to use Compiz with medium effects (instead of Metacity with no effects).

So although not 100% solved, it's not much of an issue now. 
I assume it's thanks to the change in the way Ubuntu uses the Intel-card (UXA/EXA), on which I must learn more.. (I only remember that it featured high in the 9.10 change list).
If you think that it may be due to the windows manager, I can switch to Metacity again and wait to the freeze...
