Update: I'm working with Kubuntu 9.10, where the problem still somewhat occurs... 
I read (on Ubuntuforums) that it might have something to do with the order soundcards are loaded - I'm using a onboard card as well.

Anyway: I got sound working - the entry tune plays ok when I log in, but no sound is available in applications (like playing a video in a browser) UNLESS I open a terminal and type 'sudo alsa force-reload'.
After that everything works ok during the whole session.
