Hi Jeremy,
While I was working at this problem I disconnected the CD drive and left 
the DVD drive alone.
There has not been a problem since.

I don't know if it was a faulty drive of if the combination of drives 
was the problem.

I no longer have the cd drive so I can't reinstall and try and reproduce 
the problem.
