I don't know where in Ubuntu this problem may be hiding or if this is
even something beyond Ubuntu's control and inside the BIOS. It could be
machine-specific or a general bug. Looking for discussion and triage.

My shiny new ASUS 1001P seems to suspend or otherwise scale-down when
the lid is closed. This is nothing special, other netbooks and
notebooks do the same. In my case, and I'm not sure if this is special
or not, power to USB is cut. This leads to tremendous problems when the
computer was booted off an external hard disk. It's possible to awake
the computer from sleep by pressing the power button and the hard disk
power is restored as well (as indicated by the power LED). But
apparently access to the disk is not restored, anything not already
loaded into RAM is unavailable. That even includes the shutdown and
reboot command. The only way is a hard shutdown by cutting power to the
computer.

I'm using karmic Ubuntu netbook remix.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
     Importance: High
         Status: New
