I'm currently testing this patch myself,as I had a very similar issue with random lockups and looping audio.This problem also showed up on windows: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19308762/19618450.aspx#19618450 
It seems due to a bug in the mcp79(7a) sata controller or driver not handling auto activation fpdma requests properly.My system is an aspire revo r1600 with mcp79 and atom 230(ion le vga).Hope this helps.
