I've discussed this bug with a few other kernel team members. There's a
few points we'd like to bring up:

1. So we have a good idea of what the hardware is reporting, please
install xresprobe and run ddcprobe. It will spit out all the resolutions
that the hardware has said are possible.

2. You say the bios starts up in 1024x768. How have you verified this?
We couldn't think of a way to do this off the top of our heads so we
would like more information.

3. When in 1024x768 mode, is the resolution stretched to fill the
screen, or are there borders on the sides to maintain the original
aspect ratio?

Our guess is that your bios is emulating 1024x768 mode by putting
borders on the sides. Jaunty may have had a default 1024x768 mode that
is no longer present in Karmic. However, it should be possible to
restore the 1024x768 resolution using xrandr. You would need to add a
new 1024x768 mode using --newmode, and then add it to your LVDS screen
using --addmode.

Please provide us with input for the questions and proposed solution.
