This workaround seems to be working. I have no clue why.

gksu gedit /etc/default/grub

Change the CMD_LINUX_DEFAULT line to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.modeset=0 noplymouth"

sudo update-grub


(If you're using burg instead of grub, which I am, just enter burg insted in /etc/default/burg and in update-burg).
