I use a Lenovo Thinkpad X200s with the 2.6.32-22-generic i686 Kernel.

On my external Thinkpad Keyboard, the button does work. On the laptop
itself, it doesn't. No matter if headphones/ext. speakers are connected
via the headphone jack. The "mute" button on the machine does not work.

I hope this helps to solve this little problem.
