I have exactly the same problem (Linux nirvana 2.6.32-22-generic
#36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 19:31:57 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux). The
default Lucid "ar9170usb" is driving a "TP-LINK WN-821N" in 802.11g mode
with WPA2-PSK, connecting to OpenWRT 10.03 on WRT54GL running the "b43"
mac80211 driver. I have found that BitTorrent with Transmission will
most reliably kill the USB stick within seconds/minutes, if that helps
anyone else debug it. Some forum searching and Googling reveals that
this seems to cripple many/all adaptors using this driver.

I have established that the problem occurs with both the free ar9170.fw
and two-stage ar9170-{1,2}.fw firmwares. Sometimes plugging/unplugging
fixes it, other times I have to unplug, "modprobe -r ar9170usb" and then
replug (then it works). It occurs connected directly and via a USB hub.

Regarding country codes, "iw reg get" on the client by default is
incorrect (read from EEPROM as above, I'm not in China):

country CN:
	(2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 20)
	(5735 - 5835 @ 40), (N/A, 30)

and on the router:

country 00:
	(2402 - 2472 @ 40), (3, 20)
	(2457 - 2482 @ 20), (3, 20), PASSIVE-SCAN, NO-IBSS
	(2474 - 2494 @ 20), (3, 20), NO-OFDM, PASSIVE-SCAN, NO-IBSS
	(5170 - 5250 @ 40), (3, 20), PASSIVE-SCAN, NO-IBSS
	(5735 - 5835 @ 40), (3, 20), PASSIVE-SCAN, NO-IBSS

Running "sudo iw reg set 00" on the client then sets an exact matching
802.11g spectrum, confirmed in dmesg output, and the adaptor still dies.
I don't think this is country/regulatory domain related :(.

Notably, my dmesg output is as above when a plug/unplug works, but when
the adaptor dies completely necessitating a "modprobe -r ar9170usb" I
get this:

[204298.120602] usb 1-2.4: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 46
[204298.200732] usb 1-2.4: device descriptor read/64, error -32

[204299.960177] hub 1-2:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 4

Hope this helps, let me know if I can be of further assistance :).
