FWIW, testing with an install from the amd64 20100628 alternate image
(kernel 2.6.35-6-generic) shows the screen correctly lighting up,
desktop is now visible with no modification to boot parameters after the
installation. However, there seems to be an issue with blanking the
screen for power management (will open a separate bug on that).
