Public bug reported:
With all 2.6.35-generic kernels to date, and later 2.6.34 kernels in
Ubuntu Maverick with the ATI 785 embedded graphics, the video output
stops just after the root filesystem init begins running and does not
start again for several seconds, with current kernel versions as X
starts, in earlier versions X would start while output was cut off-with
video output resuming straight to the desktop after a several second
delay. While the monitor is dark, it displays a "no signal" message.
I use plymouth message .conf files to send boot progress messages. This
problem seems to appear before mountall can start, but after an "init
running" message from plymouth that starts on startup in the /etc/init
directory.
If splash is removed from the command line, this loss of signal does not
occur, though a short flicker of a few seconds occurs as x starts up
with the Radeon driver.
If nomodeset is specified, the fb16 splash will remain showing until the
X flicker but becomes nonresponsive, with the progress dots stopping and
fsck messages from mountall and my mount messages (for multiple
filesystems) blocked.
None of this occurs on the MSI Wind U100 with the intel chipset, and it
began with kernel 2.6.34-5-generic and has not been resolved by any
subsequent kernel. Only the MSI is used online, as I do not have
Internet access at home. Video performance on the MSI seems to be
flawless.
Will add the output of the suggested terminal commands when I get back
home, then load them into the MSI so I can send them out.
