Public bug reported:

Hi, i've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit over a working KK 32bit
install. I've noticed high memory usage consumption.

Example: i have gnome desktop, no apps. Command free says that i'm using
540 Mb while before i was far below 200 Mb. Please note that i'm
considering the active memory, no cache.

Example 2: no x server running, logged from tty, i have 200 MB usage,
while i had around 50 Mb with KK.

The problem is that i cannot understand which process is using all that
memory, Here is the output of ps -eF, after gnome login. in this case
free says i'm using about 540 Mb.

I've read about a bug in ureadahead, which was not releasing memory
after a reprofiling. However i've used the suggestion reported somewhere
in launchpad to release that memory. The number given above were
obtained after this command

echo 1|sudo tee /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/buffer_size_kb

which actually released about 300 Mb.

However the problem still persist after this.

Cheers

Davide
