I don't know if this belongs here or not, however......
I have a Sony Vaio PCG-4V1W purchased in NZ
Running Ubuntu-Netbook-Remix 10.4

I had the same problem, had to add the line "options snd-hda-intel
model=auto" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
