here are tracebacks from syslog at the same time as the kern.log file
above. they were slightly different, so i thought i'd include both.

again, please let me know if there's anything else i can do to help
troubleshoot this issue. the lack of gnome-settings-daemon is a serious
usability hindrance for me.
