If you're considering a re-install, it might be wiser to re-install to
Karmic to restore brightness adjustment functionality. The brightness
issue isn't related to whether it's a fresh install of Lucid or upgrade
to Lucid, it is due to Lucid itself.

I've considered downgrading to Karmic but can't devote the time to
reconfiguring my laptop.

That's my two-cents.
