[Bug 593045] [NEW] Graphics output flashes repeating colored patterns

Public bug reported:

Occasionally, maybe once a day, a video crash happens at random - the
screen goes blank and then repeatedly flashes colored stripe patterns.
When this happens the system still responds to pings, and if I mash
Ctrl+Alt+F2 enough the text login prompt can be seen for a split second
between the flashing stripe patterns. So this looks like a problem only
with the output to the monitor; the rest of the system appears to be
responsive, and the problem is not limited to the X display.

Syslog during a crash contains items such as:

anacron[749]: Job `cron.daily' started
anacron[1424]: Updated timestamp for job `cron.daily' to 2010-06-12
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

I don't know whether the cron jobs starting was just a coincidence. I
tried manually running every script in /etc/cron.daily but was unable to
reproduce the crash.
