I'm experiencing the same problem.

$ uname -a
Linux hydra 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 19:31:57 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

$ mount
/dev/sda4 on / type btrfs (rw)

Both /dev/sda4, and /dev/sdb4 have been successfully added to /, df
indicates the combined capacity.

both
# btrfs-vol -b /
and
# btrfs-vol -r /dev/sda4 /
hang. ps reports a process state of 'D' - uninterruptable sleep in both cases.
