As hopefully you can see described above, I've tried two upstream
kernels without fixing the problem:

If you'd like me to try another one please point me to specifically
which one. I note that

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/

contains no kernel (only linux-headers, linux-source, and BUILD.LOG)
