Have you tried a mainline kernel as described at the
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds page?  I installed
2.6.34 on a T42 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/ and it solved the issue described in bug
#427439.  It may be worth a try.
