I knew I should have kept my mouth shut.  I cursed myself by posting the
previous reply.  I was installing the multimedia files necessary for DVD
playback and the system crashed on me again to the black screen with the
cursor blinking in the top left corner.  The NUM LOCK and CAPS LOCK
led's were flashing and once again ALT+K, nor ALT+SysRq R E I S U B
keystrokes did anything.  I was forced to use the system reset button
again to get back.
