Hello, I have a similar problem, though I'm using the Dell Studio 1535.
The problem is I can't seem to get my external mic jack working properly in Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit.
I have tried using a combination of JACK Audio Connection and Patchage to be able to record from my mic jack, instead of the internal mic(s), but it doesn't matter what I do with audio settings in Alsamixer and in Sound->Preferences (which has all its options currently set to "Alsa - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture"), and in Volume Control: HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer). I still can't get it to work.

Right now I'm thinking maybe I'm missing a driver for the jack, or
something. Because it doesn't matter what I do with settings. I can only
turn off the internal mics, and can't turn ON the mic jack, or otherwise
get it to work.
