I procured a single-link DVI cable from a local thrift store.  Removed
old VGA cable and adapter and installed new DVI cable.  Powered on
computer and removed radeon.modeset=0 from grub kernel command.  Still
getting "out of sync" errors on monitor during and after boot.  Rebooted
and kept radeon.modeset=0 on kernel line.  Boots and looks just fine
(much better than DVI->VGA converter!)   Will try to append
video=1024x768-24 at 70 to the kernel line.
