Hi, it appears I spoke too soon! After the next restart, the 10.04
system reverted to its previous quirky condition, only this time it
recognized my usb sticks as usb0 and usb1, not their proper names,
eg.'Mikomi 512 mb', (-like in 9.10). My external 2.5 inch HDD was
recognized as usb2 ( - not its name of '40gb external ' - like in 9.10)

When usb2 was opened it contained only the files of my 'File System',
and not the files on the HDD - these were completely absent.
Additionally I was unable to install the driver for my Canon Pixma
ip1000 ( - which worked fine on 9.10). Unfortunately, after a catalogue
of incompatabilities, starting with a blank screen after restarting
after the original update (-eventually resolved after adding
'i915.modeset=1' to 'quiet splash' in the grub file), I have abandoned
faith in Lucid Lynx and reinstalled 9.10 - which works like a dream. I
no longer have the time nor the inclination to tinker about with any
further workarounds of Lucid Lynx's teething troubles.

It would seem that my experiences, particularly with the graphics
problem, are not isolated, and have been experienced by many Ubuntu
users 'upgrading' from Karmic to Lucid. I am extremely disappointed with
Lucid Lynx, which I find to be very slow, and won't be touching it with
a bargepole. If you were to ask me, I would say that 'Lemon Lynx' would
be a more appropriate name.Hopefully its irritating idiosyncracies will
have been resolved by the time Maverick Meerkat is released.

I apologise for my negativity, since my experiences since starting to
use Ubuntu over a year ago have been very positive and I have been very
grateful for the support of the Ubuntu community.
Kind regards,
pakguru
