I noticed the following agpart lines in the kernel log.

The 16x mode is odd as the mobo only supports up to 8x and the bios
correctly only offers up to 4x as that is the maximum for this old
graphics card I think.

Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.636730] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: AGP 3.5 bridge
Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.636763] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: putting AGP V3 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 16x mode
Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.636771] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: SiS delay workaround: giving bridge time to recover
Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.652439] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: putting AGP V3 device at 0000:01:00.0 into 16x mode

Testing on a couple of other systems that run without the freeze fault,
their graphics card is not put into a mode faster than it can support.
I have no idea if this is relevant.

I also tried booting in recovery mode and going to a command line to log
on. I entered my name ok, but the keyboard froze as I was typing my
password - the same freeze as with a graphical user interface.
