Ok I have pulled back the patch which was suggested in comment #25, and
built some test kernels.  If anyone is able to test these and confirm
whether this fix is indeed the solution that would be helpful.  Of
course there is significant risk it is not, so don't do it with your
favourite data.  If you could test the kernels at the URL below and
report back here that would be helpful:
