Thanks for the comments....I have completed the above 'apport-collect'
instructions. I now find that not only are my usb sticks not recognized
but none of my external usb 2.5 inch HDD's are recognised(-although they
all light up...showing that they are powered on).
As regards the power status of my usb sticks....that seems to be OK -
the small red flashing light in the stick blinks several times when I
plug it in...just like it always does...so it must be getting power from
the laptop.
It may be relevant to inform you that I had a graphics problem when I
upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04....my screen went black after restart. This
was eventually resolved by adding 'i915.modeset=1' to 'quiet splash' in
a line of the grub menu. 10.04 graphics now boot without a problem.
