[Bug 588833] [NEW] system crashes

Public bug reported:

System crashes at least once a day. The computer just switches off. I was running 9.4. Upgraded to 9.10 then due to issues with display 10.4 a few days later (display problems reported as a separate bug [Bug 586048])
System is generally very slow, it takes a lot longer to start up and firefox is very slow often freezing. 
There's no combination of programmes that I'm running, but firefox has always been running.
There also no problems with printers - there's no printers available, and a NFTS external HD.
