This trouble is still here.
Since a recent update of my ubuntu 10.04 I can see this problem all the time (I never seen it before).
My box is a dell/AMD64 using the 64 bit gnu/linux kernel 2.6.32.
This problem is 100% repeatable for me too.  On every startup (from a cold shutdown), I can use the GDM login box as usual but after that the keyboard becomes unresponsive.
To workaround this issue, I have to unplug my usb keyboard, wait some seconds, and reconnect it. The keybord then works fine till the next reboot.
