I don't know if this is related at all, however bug #598322 is blank
screen on ati radeon mobility 7500 with an external monitor.  This does
occur with today's ppa.

Maverick Meerkat Alpha 1 linux version 2.6.34-5-generic does boot O.K.
in KMS mode with the same xorg so it would appear to be a kernel bug.

Alpha 2, updates since, and today's ppa requires radeon.modeset=0 in the
linux boot line to boot successfully.
