You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (actually - did a full reinstall since I couldn't get the Update Manager to perform the upgrade). While the PC speaker worked perfectly on Karmic, try as I may, I can't get it to work on Lucid. As a result:
$ echo -ne '\a'
does nothing, I get no audible about errors from Vim and a few of my other console applications can't inform me about certain events.
I removed the "blacklist pcspkr" line from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. When I execute lsmod, I get pcspkr in the list of the loaded modules. I even tried the trick that worked for some people on Karmic: rmmod & modprobe again - to no avail.
The thing that gives me hope is that I installed the beep package and the beep application can make a sound.

$ uname -a
Linux neo 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:22:14 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.32-24.38-generic 2.6.32.15+drm33.5
$ dmesg | grep -i speaker
[   11.634445] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input5
[   15.490216] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input6
[  930.970961] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input7

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Fix Released
