Just to confirm, the backported Lucid kernel has solved the problem on my machine, EeePC 1000HE with AR928X.
Lucid backported 2.6.32-11.15 (based on 2.6.32.4)

Everything seems to work fine, no disconnections reported by dmesg, excellent link quality and a constant 3.0 MB/sec transfer rate.
