This is a somewhat frustrating bug, as the hardware drivers for the
device work just fine, but the device detection and reset doesn't work.
Having looked at it in some depth, I'm not even sure this is a kernel
issue: as far as I can tell, the device fails to send any signal over
USB when a card is inserted.  If the USB cable is disconnected and
reconnected, or on first boot, if there is a card in the device, that
card is detected, and card changes are detected if one switches a card
and attempts to access the old card (the device sends no signal to
indicate removal just as it sends no signal on insert, so the kernel
believes the card to still be present).  It may be that there is some
way one can actively poll the device from userspace (this is beyond me),
and so run some helper daemon that exits if no supported devices are
detected, and otherwise polls or resets the device every N seconds (120
and 300 seem reasonable potential values for N).
