Tested. Crashes as before.

Could we apply this and your extra debug message patch to something
2.6.32 as well and build test packages with that? It seems that 2.6.31
cannot work with Plymouth and some other novelties found in Lucid, plus
upstream probably wants us to try against the latest and greatest.
