@tankdriver: you are absolutely right; I found I can reproduce this if I
copy a large file to a USB flash device (I was using USB hard drives
when I tested it before). I've opened a new bug for it (see bug #504113)
because I don't think it's relevant to this bug.

However, 2.6.32 does fix (for me) the unresponsive desktop problem when
copying a large file to a slow device that LGB reported.
