I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop with ubuntu 9.10 installed.  I closed
the lid and the computer entered s3 (confirmed by sound of hard drive
spinning down and all status lights except power turning off; power
light started slowly dimming on and off).  When I opened the lid some
hours later, the power, wifi, and bluetooth lights came full on, the
hard drive light would blink intermittently, but the screen stayed black
and the computer seemed unresponsive to keyboard commands (CTRL+ALT+F2
did nothing, CTRL+ALT+DEL did nothing (I'm a recent Windows convert ;-),
pressing caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock buttons did not turn on
the appropriate status lights).  After hard power down and reboot, I saw
that closing the lid is set to suspend the laptop and received a crash
notification.
