I do not know if it helps fixing the bug, but

echo 'install rt2870sta modprobe --ignore-install rt2870sta ; /bin/echo
"1737 0078" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2870/new_id' | sudo tee
/etc/modprobe.d/rt2870sta.conf

Gets the device up and running for me. With the driver that comes with
2.6.32-19-generic, no re-compilation of kernel or driver src.
