@Jason: from a live CD, type F6 on the boot screen to select advanced options, change the kernel cmdline to add i915.modeset=0 after "--", so if it was e.g.:
... boot=casper -- 
change it to:
... boot=casper -- i915.modeset=0

that should be preserved upon install
