Let me do a quick update about vostro.
Adding i8042.nomux to the kernel parameters at least allow the touchpad to be recognized.

The Touchpad tab is visible in System->Preferences->Mouse
but when touching, tapping touchpad cursor doesn't move at all and the following is logged:

psmouse.c: bad data from KBC - timeout
