I managed to connect while using WEP!
- First try to connect the WEP protected wi-fi network providing the correct shared key. It fails but save the WEP key in the local keyring.
- On your modem, disable WEP protection.
- Connect your PC to the now unprotected Wi-fi network. It connects.
- Now, re-enable WEP protection on your modem.
- The PC disconnects and reconnects to the protected network using its previously stored WEP key. It works (even after a shutdown)!
This is quite a strange behaviour and this workaround requires you to
have access to the modem settings.
