I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and I was having same issue.
Over long usage, numpad seems to stop accepting numbers.
I tried rebooting and was able to login to my account at the login screen using the numpad but once I am logged in the numpad functionality again stops.
However, this behavior was random.

I have a dual boot Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.
Numpad issue persists in both of them.
In Ubuntu, I disabled "Pointers can be controlled using numpad" from System > Preferences > Keyboard > Mouse Keys, and the numpad is working fine now.
After the above change I have not seen any issue in over a week.
I will be updating this post if I again face this issue.

Thanks.
