Public bug reported:
This is likely related (or identical) to the bug described at 563156,
but I'm filing a new report as requested at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/HighTemperatures
A brief description is: My laptop runs its fan constantly and runs at a
somewhat higher temperature when I am using the open source drivers for
my video card (at ATI mobility radeon 5430). When I use the restricted
driver, the fan runs less often and the system runs cooler. (I won't
complain about the other problems with the restricted driver here.)
Attached to this bug is a tar file which contains some log files with
temperature logs in various configurations, and descriptions of those
configurations.
A random thought: I didn't see this mentioned in the other bug ticket
anywhere, so I'll mention my uninformed thought about this bug here. I
think that this GPU has some dynamic power management (ATI PowerPlay),
which sounds to me like something similar to CPU throttling. Perhaps the
restricted driver enables it and the open source driver does not. This
seems to me like something that could account for the difference.
I assume that this automated bug-reporting-thingy (which I've never used
before) is automatically including information about my system, so I
won't repeat all that here.
