Also having this problem, with a Alfa 54G USB stick on Ubuntu 10.04
(Karmic)

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8187 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187
Wireless Adapter

The connection becomes very slow after a while (due to packet loss). I'm now trying the rate 'workaround'
After re-associating to the network, everything is fine again, for a while.  The time after which the problem occurs seems to depend on the network load.
