I can narrow this down a little bit.  On the kernel that properly
recognizes my touchpad, uname -a reports:

Linux cat 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP

On the kernel I'm running now with no touchpad support:

Linux cat 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP
