Here are my results
root at BGD-Desktop:~# aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
root at BGD-Desktop:~# ls /dev/snd
seq timer
root at BGD-Desktop:~#
This may not be relevant as I have purged and reinstall alsa and pulseaudio
several times attempting to fix the problem.
The latest update was to purge pulseaudio entirely.
